The Department of French and Francophone Studies at Davidson College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position to begin July 1, 2018.  We are hiring a specialist in Francophone Studies with demonstrated teaching and research interests in French-speaking North Africa (Maghreb and diaspora) and the Francophone Arab World.  The successful candidate will be able to teach all levels of French language and Francophone literatures and cultures, and to serve periodically as director of our study abroad program in Tours. We are looking for a committed teacher-scholar who will maintain an active research agenda, participate in departmental and college-wide initiatives, advise and mentor students, supervise student research, and participate actively in curriculum building.  Annual professional travel funding and opportunities for research support are available.  In addition to a major and minor in French and Francophone Studies, Davidson offers interdisciplinary majors in Africana Studies, Arab Studies, and Gender and Sexuality Studies.  Cross-listed courses in these areas are encouraged, as are collaborations with Digital Studies, Film and Media Studies, Global Literary Theory, and Middle East Studies.  Regular teaching load is 5 courses over two semesters, with 4 courses in the first year. Requirements: PhD by August 2018, native or near-native French and English, demonstrated or potential excellence in and enthusiasm for undergraduate teaching, and a minimum of one academic year spent living in a French-speaking country or region.
