The Africana Studies Department at Davidson College invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Africana Studies with an emphasis in Africana politics and/or economics, starting July 1, 2018. Preference will be given to candidates who can complement our existing strengths in history, sociology, and literature by bringing expertise in the political economy of Africa and/or the African Diaspora. The successful candidate will be able to develop and teach the Africana methods course as well as Introduction to Africana Studies. Collaborations with Political Science, Economics, Environmental Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, and/or Philosophy are encouraged, as are cross-listing courses with these areas. We are looking for a committed teacher-scholar who will maintain an active research agenda, participate in departmental and college-wide initiatives, advise and mentor students, supervise student research, and participate actively in curriculum building.

Qualifications:  A Ph.D. (in hand before July 1, 2018) in Africana Studies, Political Science, Economics, and/or Philosophy is preferred although candidates with specializations in additional fields that are underrepresented in our department will also be considered.

Basic Functions: 

We seek applicants whose research and teaching interests focus on Africana politics and/or economics. We encourage applicants with teaching and research interests in Africana Studies in one or more of the following areas: electoral politics, political theory, black political economy, development and underdevelopment theory, gerrymandering/gentrification, environmental justice, criminal justice, carceral studies, immigration, colonialism, and/or capitalism and slavery.

The candidate must show clear evidence of an active research agenda, demonstrated or potential excellence in teaching, and interest in departmental and college-wide initiatives that promote Africana Studies.  Regular teaching load is five courses over two semesters, with four courses in the first year. These include Introduction to Africana Studies, 300-level methods course, and courses in the applicant’s areas of expertise. The successful candidate will also mentor undergraduate research projects. The candidate is expected to participate in an active young department with a vision of Africana Studies that celebrates interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship and a transnational and diasporic focus.

  6. Names and email addresses for at least three references who are prepared to provide letters of recommendation.
