Aligned with Davidson’s mission to assist students in developing humane instincts, understanding and valuing diversity, and developing disciplined and creative minds for lives of leadership and service, the Director will imagine and realize the Library for the future of Davidson.
Across campus and beyond, Davidson constituents look forward to a bold reimagining of the Library that ensures its central place in the life and mission of the College into the future. The next Leland M. Park Director of Davidson College Library will lead this charge. Reporting to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty, the Director is responsible for all aspects of developing and managing the Library’s services, programs, resources, and space to ensure that it continues to facilitate the humane, creative and disciplined pursuit of knowledge that characterizes Davidson. As a member of the faculty, the Director engages directly in institutional conversations about teaching, learning, and research in a culturally pluralistic society, in the ongoing development of the College’s curriculum, and in discussions about academic policy, priorities, investments, and the College’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. The Director consults and collaborates with a broad array of College departments and divisions, including the Center for Teaching and Learning and Technology & Innovation as well as Facilities, Student Life, and Public Safety.
Davidson’s new Library Director will be an innovative, collaborative, user-centered, and highly professional leader who will advance the College’s mission by achieving and sustaining excellence in Library planning, management, and operations. Requirements for the role include a graduate degree (MLS from an ALA-accredited institution, PhD, or equivalent), demonstrated commitment to the academic values of rigorous inquiry, intellectual integrity, inclusive practices, and respect for scholarly and creative endeavors on the part of faculty and students. As do students, staff, and faculty, the Director will embody the College’s commitment to integrity. Candidates should have at least eight years of relevant professional experience.
The Davidson College Library fosters student learning and faculty teaching and is committed to providing user-centered services, spaces, and resources for knowledge creation and campus collaborations. The Library’s collection, developed in partnership with College faculty, includes over 500,000 print volumes and access to over one million electronic books and nearly 55,000 serial titles.
