The Animal Care Manager/Teaching Assistant will serve as technical/research and teaching support for departments of Biology and Psychology; this will include, but not be limited to: manage animal facility activities and the care and use of lab animals, provide supervision of animal care personnel, insure compliance with government guidelines for controlled substances and the college’s Institutional Animal Care and use Committee, place orders for chemicals and supplies for departments, manage animal care and use budget, coordinate lab safety and chemical handling/ inventory for departments, send reports to governing agencies and maintain documentation, structure institutional animal research program, teach research and surgical procedures in labs, and assist student/faculty research projects.
Supervise and manage animal care personnel, perform animal husbandry.
Coordinate Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee activities and meetings. Ensure adherence to regulations of all activities related to the animal care and use, controlled substances, and chemical hygiene/lab safety.
Serve as research assistant for faculty; Perform anesthesia, euthanasia, assist in surgical procedures, calculate drug dosing, mix solutions, collect data, set up research projects, etc.
Serve as a teaching assistant: Teach surgical/tissue collection techniques, humane handling, care and use of animals to students, staff and faculty.
Order, receive and coordinate disposal of all chemicals for faculty, staff and students. Maintain chemical inventory and MSDS inventory.
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Psychology, Pre-veterinarian, etc. or vocational/technical training and four or more years of managing an animal research facility; AALAS Laboratory Animal Care Technologist Certification; Minimum three years prior experience. Training/certification in safety standards, chemical handling and animal care and use in research required.
Prefer experience with Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees, controlled substance regulations, and lab safety. Excellent organizational, multi-tasking, and interpersonal skills required. Basic computer skills required. Budget management skills are preferred.
