This is a regular position - 40 hours a week, 9 months per year registered nurse position in our Health Services Office. This position will provide health care and health related advice/education to the student population. To coordinate urgent/emergent care and referrals to specialists.
Seeing students at scheduled appointments and handling walk-in visits. Assessment of the physical can emotional condition of the student patient by obtaining a complete history of the presenting problem including chief complaint, subjective findings, objective findings. This also includes telephone assessments and advice.
Performing laboratory procedures/tests as indicated by the student's illness. Administering prescription medicines as indicated by physician-approved standing orders and/or suggesting appropriate over-the-counter medication/treatments. Administering allergy shots, doing dressing changes, administering treatments as ordered. Assisting the physician at sick call with pap smears, I&D's, eye tray, etc.
Determining a plan of care and educating students on appropriate interventions for their presenting problem. This also involves giving student appropriate written materials.
Reviewing and co-signing both nurse and physician chart notes. Notifying students of x-ray reports and diagnostic reports sent to outside labs with associated physician instructions. Emailing/calling students for follow-up physician appointments, timed immunizations, follow-up lab, assuring connection with counselors, etc. The nurses maintain an extensive follow-up book and spend several hours each day on this. Obtaining progress reports via phone/email.
Facilitating referrals for x-rays and to specialists/hospitals. This can be time-consuming with the many different out-of-state insurance policies, frequently requiring pre-certification for certain diagnostics and referrals. It includes obtaining a student's schedule of availability, obtaining current insurance information and determining the need for pre-certification, completing release of information forms, transmitting relevant records, suggesting transportation options, answering parent questions when released to do so, and following up to see that we have receive diagnostic reports/records.
Complete documentation of all of the above via dictation. Also recording in laboratory logs and assuring documentation of physician review for CLIAA purposes.
Bachelor's Degree. Minimum of three years nursing experience, preferably urgent care, emergency room or ambulatory care (family practice or adolescent). Current NC Registered Nurse license. Prefer experience with laboratory testing and venipunctures. Current Adult CPR certification desired.
Must be available to work rotating day, evening and night shift as well as every third weekend.
