Department: Student Counseling
The Student Health and Counseling Center (SHCC) at Davidson College is seeking applicants for a 10-month, full-time counseling position to begin in August 2019. This position is designed to provide individual and group therapy, outreach, crisis, and consultation services in a college mental health setting. The primary focus of this position is the provision of direct clinical services, including initial assessments, crisis assessments, referrals, case management, individual brief counseling, and group psychotherapy. Secondary –but critical– foci of this position include provision of clinical services to underrepresented student populations, and students with body image concerns.
- Provide intervention for ongoing and “walk-in” clients presenting with acute mental health crisis (e.g., severe self-harm, sexual assault trauma, relationship violence, etc.).
- Familiarity with short-term/brief models of counseling and psychotherapy.
- Maintain clinical records and necessary statistics of psychotherapeutic and other client contacts, in compliance with ethics, law, and best practices.
- Possess strong interpersonal skills and experience working in a team environment.
- Actively participate in weekly staff meetings (e.g., case consultations, outreach initiatives, etc.).
- Serve on the Eating Disorder Interdisciplinary Treatment Team addressing the individual needs of students and also interfacing with involved campus personnel.
- Collaborate with other campus departments (e.g., Athletics, Residence Life, Office of the Dean of Students, etc.) to develop and plan outreach programs that address the current trends in mental health on college campuses.
- Consult with parents, physicians, off-campus counseling services, faculty, Student Life staff, and other campus offices, when appropriate, and with appropriate authorization in order to provide quality care to students.
- Ensure continuity of care between on- and off-campus resources with regards to individual student mental health care, to include case management.
- Create and present in-service training as requested.
- One evening per week is required during the fall and spring semester.
- Serve in an after-hours on-call rotation throughout the academic year.
- Master’s degree or higher in Counseling, Psychology, or Social Work with at least 2 years post-degree experience, preferably in higher education.
- Must be eligible for NC licensure as a therapist within their clinical field of practice (e.g., LP, LPC, LCSW, etc.) and will be expected to obtain full licensure within the first year of employment.
- Thorough knowledge of current mental health issues facing college students, including suicidality, sexual trauma, relationship violence, disordered eating, etc.
- Commitment to serving a diverse student population, including: students from underrepresented populations; various racial and ethnic backgrounds; gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, and transgender students; low socio-economic students; and international students.
- Prior experience working in a college counseling center.
- Ability to work independently while also contributing positively to a team-oriented environment
- Comprehensive knowledge of trends and current best practices in college student mental health care
- Demonstrated experience working with underrepresented populations such as gender-diverse individuals and those from diverse racial and ethnic groups.
- Clinical skills that are specific to dealing with students who struggle with body image concerns and/or are along the disordered eating continuum.
- Ability to use an electronic record keeping system.
