Associate Director of Alumni and Family Engagement
Focus on digital engagement, career networking and engagement social media presence
The Office of Alumni and Family Engagement in the division of College Relations seeks applications for an Associate Director who is responsible for the strategy and oversight of digital engagement including lifelong learning efforts, career networking and Davidson’s alumni social media and online presence. This position also oversees regional programming and supervises the Assistant Director who supports alumni chapter programs and young alumni engagement. The overall vision for engagement communications including the supervision of an administrative assistant, workflow, collaboration, timing, and analysis is managed by this position. Within the generational model employed by the office of Alumni and Family Engagement, the Associate Director advocates for the Baby Boomer generation (Classes of 1967-1985), developing programming and services best suited for alumni in these classes. As a senior member of the Alumni and Family Engagement staff, the person in this role assists the Director as needed in determining overall strategy for the team.
The Associate Director should be a strong collaborator, supervisor, and communicator with a vision for alumni and family participation in the life of the college as well as a passion for building networks. A successful candidate makes strategic decisions, encourages feedback about programming options, is able to work collaboratively with internal and external constituencies while demonstrating cultural sensitivity and a strong respect for differences, and enjoys working as part of a team.
- Digital Engagement and Social Media Strategy: Manages engagement social media accounts and office web presence; oversees email communications related to regional, digital and career engagement; and co-manages the Social Media Ambassador program. Oversees digital engagement strategy for lifelong learning, the career/mentor platform (Davidson Career Advisor Network), online directory and volunteer portal.
- Sets strategic vision and exploration of digital platforms and engagement technology solutions. Serves as vendor liaison for FirstHand, Online Directory, Brazen, EverTrue, Give Campus and Thru Text. Demonstrates a willingness and ability to learn, including self-help, and grow technological change.
- Regional Programming Strategy: Supervises Assistant Director (regional programming and young alumni engagement) and helps to develop and oversee regional engagement strategy. Supervises administrative assistant who supports multiple professional staff members, working with email marketing and event management in the Advancement database. Manages priorities for the administrative assistant and coordinates workflow for communications.
- Coordinates Faculty on the Road program, including some travel, and works with Assistant Director to plan and implement the Davidson Network Night program.
- Generational Advocate: Coordinates and assesses volunteer, digital and event-based engagement opportunities for our alumni population 35-50 years past graduation (Currently classes between 1967 and 1985). Develops strategy around lifelong learning and works with staff to implement appropriate generation-based lifelong learning initiatives.
- Career Networking: Coordinates and assesses alumni career networking and development initiatives that connect alumni to each other and to students around shared professional interests. Manages the Davidson Career Advisor Network and serves as a liaison to the Center for Career Development.
- Leadership: Serves on leadership team that drives strategy around alumni and family engagement, making recommendations about programming and initiatives. Actively seeks opportunities to collaborate both within College Relations and across campus. With fellow Associate Director, shares responsibility for functioning as acting director in the absence of the director. Helps plan, and assists as needed, in the management of meetings and retreats. Serves as the primary liaison between the Office of Alumni and Family Engagement with Faculty, Digital Communications, and Advancement Operations. Assesses key metrics related to digital engagement, regional programming and communications strategies.
Physical /Environmental Demands:
Office environment. Ability to spend days working primarily at a desk while manipulating a computer keyboard, mouse, telephone, and other typical office equipment. Night and evening on campus event work is sometimes required, allowing engagement and communication with alumni and friends of the college. Physical mobility required for most, if not all, alumni and family events on and off campus.
- Bachelor’s degree and three years work experience required
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Comfort with public speaking and solid writing/editing skills are required
- Self-motivation and the ability to manage a high volume of projects with competing deadlines
- Strong desire and ability to work effectively with persons from diverse generational, religious, racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds
- Comfort in a Web-based software environment, proficiency in basic Microsoft programs (such as Excel and Word) and the willingness and ability to learn new software platforms
- Knowledge and mastery of social media outlets and management with an understanding of its role in community-building as well as a desire and ability to learn new technology platforms quickly (including self-directed instruction)
- Master's Degree in higher education or related field and five years work experience preferred. The ideal candidate will have experience in higher education, alumni and/or constituent relations, volunteer management, public relations, event planning, nonprofit administration and/or related fields
- Experience working with digital engagement, career development or networking initiatives, and event planning
- Flexibility and adaptability, especially in working collaboratively as part of a team
- High degree of personal initiative
- Superior attention to detail while also understanding big-picture program development
- Understanding of Davidson College and an appreciation of the liberal arts experience
